Bookshelf Layout Mockups for a 131 in x 81 in Wall

Assumption: the usable wall opening is 131 in wide by 81 in high, and the concrete pillar is at the left end with an 11.75 in projection from the wall. Photorealistic mockups show that left-pillar condition; the dimensioned elevation diagrams are to scale and can be mirrored when reading side-to-side.

Photorealistic Mockups

These panels are generated individually to keep the visible unit count, side fillers, top trim, floor contact, and depth relationship aligned with the technical design. Pillar shown on the left, window on the right, and shelving trimmed to meet the right wall.

A. Best flush built-in: 4 IKEA BILLY/OXBERG glass units

126 in product width 2.5 in side fillers 11.75 in depth: flush with pillar Books/display only, not LPs Est. C$1.0k-1.15k before tax
Elevation: 4 x 31.5 in BILLY/OXBERG 79.5 in high Plan: shelving depth aligns with 11.75 in pillar projection

Why it works

  • Best use of the wall with standard parts.
  • Needs only small side fillers and a thin top trim.
  • Glass doors reduce dust and look most built-in.

Compromise

  • LPs in outer sleeves need about 13 in usable depth, so BILLY is too shallow.
  • Records could only face outward, sit angled, or live elsewhere.

B. Best IKEA vinyl + glass: 5 tall BESTA columns

118.125 in product width 6.44 in side fillers 15.75 in depth: LP-friendly Projects 4 in past pillar Est. C$1.65k-2.05k before tax
Elevation: 5 x 23.625 in BESTA 75.625 in high, trimmed to wall Plan: 15.75 in depth gives record clearance and projects about 4 in past the pillar face

Why it works

  • Most practical IKEA route for vinyl behind doors.
  • Symmetrical and easy to make built-in with a face frame.
  • Glass or solid lower doors can be mixed.

Compromise

  • Not flush with the pillar depth.
  • Wider side fillers are needed unless you add custom shelves or display niches.

C. Mixed-depth feature: BILLY sides + stacked KALLAX record center

120.875 in product width 5.06 in side fillers Side depth 11.75 in Center depth 15.375 in for LPs 1x4 KALLAX fits above 4x4 Est. C$920-1.12k before tax
5.5 in top filler Elevation: shallow glass side towers stacked deeper KALLAX cubbies in the center Plan: sides align with pillar center steps forward about 3.625 in

Why it works

  • Preserves the flush built-in edge at the pillar.
  • Puts vinyl in the ergonomic center zone.
  • The 1x4 KALLAX fills most of the former custom bridge area with matching cubbies.
  • Only a small top filler remains, so the built-in trim is simpler.

Compromise

  • KALLAX is open, so records are not dust protected unless you add custom acrylic or sliding doors.
  • The stacked KALLAX units should be mechanically connected and wall-anchored; the upper row should not just sit loose.

D. Ready-made marketplace route: 2 x 63 in glass cabinets

126 in product width 2.5 in side fillers 16.3 in depth: LP-friendly Light shelf ratings Est. C$2.65k-2.85k before tax
Elevation: two 63 in wide imported cabinets trimmed at sides/top Plan: deep enough for LPs protrudes about 4.55 in past pillar face

Why it works

  • Nearly perfect width with only two major pieces.
  • Glass doors and deep shelves are built in.
  • Usually cheaper than premium furniture.

Compromise

  • Many import cabinets use low shelf ratings and may not be good for dense books or records.
  • Less flexible if parts arrive damaged or go out of stock.

E. Premium/custom route: Room & Board Linear-style modules

126 in shown: 50 + 26 + 50 2.5 in side fillers 80 in high 16 in depth: LP-friendly Est. C$8k-18k+ before tax
Elevation: custom 80 in high cabinet wall glass upper/closed lower mix Plan: cabinet depth is vinyl-friendly projects about 4.25 in beyond the pillar

Why it works

  • Looks most like intentional furniture, not a hack.
  • Widths, depths, doors, drawers, and finishes can be specified.
  • Better if this is a long-term library wall.

Compromise

  • Highest budget by a large margin.
  • Still projects beyond the pillar unless you choose shallow cabinets and give up vinyl depth.

F. Hybrid depth: single-column BILLY sides + BESTA record center

126 in product width 2.5 in side fillers Outer depth 11.75 in Center depth 15.75 in for LPs Est. C$1.7k-2.0k before tax
Elevation: narrow shallow BILLY towers frame four deeper BESTA record columns Plan: outside towers stay flush with the pillar BESTA center projects 4 in for records

Why it works

  • Outer edges stay visually shallow and align with the pillar depth.
  • Four BESTA columns give enclosed vinyl storage behind glass doors.
  • The 126 in product width preserves the same tidy 2.5 in side fillers as the all-BILLY option.

Compromise

  • Less vinyl capacity than the five-column all-BESTA layout.
  • BESTA needs a raised center plinth or top filler because it is 3.875 in shorter than BILLY.
  • The mixed systems have different door styles and whites may not match perfectly.

Layout Width use Height use Depth at pillar Vinyl storage Dust control Typical use case
A. BILLY/OXBERG 126 in product + 5 in trim 79.5 in product + 1.5 in top trim Flush No, too shallow for normal LPs in sleeves Good Books, collectibles, dust-minimized display
B. BESTA 118.125 in product + 12.875 in trim/niches 75.625 in product + 5.375 in trim Projects 4 in Yes Good with GLASSVIK/SINDVIK doors Vinyl-heavy wall with doors
C. BILLY + stacked KALLAX 120.875 in product + 10.125 in trim Stacked KALLAX approx. 74 in high; 5.5 in top filler below BILLY top Sides flush, center projects Yes in center Good at sides, open at center Mixed books and records, feature-center composition
D. 2 x 63 in marketplace cabinets 126 in product + 5 in trim 78.7 in product + 2.3 in trim Projects about 4.55 in Dimensionally yes; weight rating may be limiting Good Display-forward storage with lighter loads
E. Premium/custom modules 126 in shown + 5 in trim 80 in product + 1 in trim Projects about 4.25 in Yes Good Best-looking long-term built-in alternative
F. single-column BILLY + BESTA center 126 in product + 5 in trim BILLY 79.5 in; BESTA 75.625 in on raised center plinth Sides flush, center projects 4 in Yes in center Good with BILLY/OXBERG and BESTA glass doors Best hybrid if the pillar edge should stay shallow but records need doors

For a true built-in look, the trim shown can be replaced by scribed fillers, face-frame strips over vertical seams, a plinth/base, and a top rail or crown. All tall units should be anchored to the wall with hardware appropriate for the wall material.
